Another One! Mandile Leads Comeback as #11 Women's Soccer Knocks Off Pace, 3-2

Pleasantville, N.Y. — Head coach Brooke DeRosa and the Adelphi women's soccer team took a quick trip to Westchester to on Wednesday night when they took on Pace in the team's regular season finale.

The beginning of the game was not ideal for the Panthers as the Setters struck quickly with an impressive goal from outside the box to take the lead in the ninth minute.

Adelphi would then turn on the attacks as it began to control the pace of the game. Alexis Hellman and Madison Apicella would threaten but the Panthers finally broke through in the 32nd minute when Gia Mandile scored maybe her best goal of the season, breaking the tie from a few yards outside of the box. For the remaining 13 minutes, not much would happen as the rivals went into the break tied at one.

Much like the beginning of the first half, Pace would score very quickly but this time it was immediately off of the kick off. Just 11 seconds into the period, a pace forward would surprise Alba López Martinez and sky a ball from behind midfield over the Panther goalkeeper's head and into the back of the net.

The 'Cats knew they could easily turn up the pressure on the Setters' back line and did so instantly. Kayleigh Goodrich and Carly Issing each ripped off some shots before Goodrich finally came through in the 54th minute off of corner kick when Goodrich snuck behind the Pace defense and headed the ball in.

Pace would respond positively, but López Martinez would make three key saves in less than ten minutes to keep the game deadlocked. Isabella Bannellis knocked on the door for Adelphi but was blocked at the goal line by an opposing defender.

Adelphi continued to hunt for its third goal and would finally get it in the 82nd minute off of another corner. This time Apicella would find Mandile for her second goal of the game and what would wind up being the game winner as the 'Cats brought home a 3-2 victory.

The Panthers wrapped up their regular season with an 11-2, 9-1 NE10 record, the No. 1 ranking in the east region, No. 11 ranking nationally and the overall No. 1 seed in the NE10 tournament. The Brown and Gold will host No. 8 Southern Connecticut State on Sunday at 1 p.m. in the first round.
