Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women's Soccer Battles, Loses 1-0 in NE10 Title Game to Franklin Pierce

Garden City, N.Y. — Head coach Brooke DeRosa and the No. 1 seeded Adelphi women's soccer team hosted No. 2 seeded Franklin Pierce in the NE10 championship on Sunday afternoon.

Madison Apicella started the game off quickly, firing a shot just 22 seconds in but the attempt would sail wide. Kayleigh Goodrich would have a try of her own just four minutes later but it would be saved by the Franklin Pierce keeper.

The Ravens countered Adelphi's attack with a flurry of shots themselves, but all were either saved by Peyton DeRouen or missed the net. This would set the tone for the remainder of the half as both teams had opportunities, but could not find the back of the net as the game went into the half scoreless.

The second period saw the same beginning as the first. Adelphi came out flying with two shots from Apicella and Carly Issing, but both were saved. Franklin Pierce responded with an offensive attack of their own and unlike the first half, were able to find the net.

Claudia Peirce, who had been the Ravens' best player all season, snuck behind the Panther backline and was sprung free by an excellent through ball to give the visitor a 1-0 lead.

After the goal, Franklin Pierce completely refigured its lineup to withstand a ferocious Adelphi attack. The plan seemingly worked as the Panthers trio of Apicella, Goodrich and Gia Mandile were swarmed whenever they touched the ball and could not get off a clean shot.

Dylann Trahey had the Panthers' best chance of tying the game with a strike from outside the box but it would sail just over the crossbar and out of play.

As much as Adelphi pushed down the field, it could not get a good enough scoring chance and the game ended 1-0 in favor of Franklin Pierce.

Goodrich, Issing and Apicella had all six of the team's six shots on goal while DeRouen made eight saves.

The Panthers now await their fate for the NCAA tournament. The selection will be aired Monday night at 7 p.m. on NCAA.com
