Garden City, N.Y. — Head coach Gary Book and the Adelphi men's soccer team took on nationally ranked Southern New Hampshire at Motamed Field on Saturday afternoon.
After the Penmen ended Franklin Pierce's 64 game unbeaten streak, the Panthers were looking to play spoiler.
Adelphi got off to a roaring start, with a Pablo Herrera shot threatening in the first two minutes of the game. The 'Cats would continue to be the offensive aggressor in the first half as Victor Castel and Herrera saw their shots sail wide.
SNHU would threaten in both the 38th and 43rd minutes, but the field was tilted in the Panthers' favor in the first half as they controlled possession and outshot the Penmen seven to four.
The second half was a bit of a different story, unfortunately. Adelphi had a fantastic chance to score in the 56th minute when Castel's shot hit the post but after that, SNHU began to take over. The hobbled 'Cats lost two players to injury mid game and while the defense tried to stand tall, a 71st minute Penmen strike would give them the lead.
Vaclav Borovicka tried rifling the ball towards the net in the 86th minute but it sailed just high as it would be Adelphi's best scoring chance in the dying minutes. The Panthers would fall 1-0, and drop to 6-3-2 (3-1-1 NE10).
The Adelphi men's soccer team will return to the pitch on Wednesday when they take a break and host the College of Staten Island at 7 p.m.
