Garden City, N.Y. - In a wire-to-wire finish, the Adelphi University men's basketball team lost by a nailbiting 84-82 decision to NE10 foe Assumption University on Tuesday night at the Center for Recreation and Sport.
In its closest game this season, the loss snaps an impressive seven-game winning streak for Head Coach
Dave Duke's squad.
Only Adelphi (11-5, 7-3 NE10) surpassed a lead of double digits, but Assumption's 9-2 run over the game's final 3:40 was the difference in the contest.
The Panthers trailed by a bucket with twelve seconds left in regulation, but
Conor Regan's game-tying fadeaway in the final ticks fell short of the mark.
A
Dayshaun Walton three-point play and Regan trey ignited a 10-0 first-half run that gave the 'Cats a 32-22 lead with 6:15 to go before the half.
Assumption (9-7, 5-5 NE10) eventually managed to tie the score at 41-all, before Walton's back-to-back buckets sent Adelphi into the locker room with a four-point advantage. Walton tied a season-high with 25 points and grabbed ten rebounds for his second double-double of the 2023-24 season.
The Greyhounds played from behind for nearly the entire second half, until Assumption's Alex Carlisle -- who led all players with 24 minutes -- took over in the final minutes. Out of a timeout, Carlisle drove to the rack for what resulted in the game-winning jumper with 25 seconds to go.
Five players finished in double figures for Adelphi.
Andrew Delaney and
Elijah Lewis added 16 and 11 points, respectively, out of the starting five.
Mason Jackson and
David Luberoff individually contributed 12 and 10 points off the bench.
Duke and the Panthers will now travel to Colchester, Vt. for a 3:30 p.m. opening tip at first-place Saint Michael's College on Saturday (Jan. 20).
