Garden City, N.Y. - To start the new year, the Adelphi University Student Counseling Center has announced the creation of a new role, in an effort to provide the best care for the student-athletes in Garden City.
The position - Counselor and Athletics Care Coordinator - will be filled by existing Adelphi counselor Tobie Langsam, PhD, LMSW, who has spent the last three semesters assisting the student-athlete population.
"There's nothing more important to us than the health and well-being of our student-athletes," expressed Director of Athletics Danny McCabe. "We recognize the need to add this position and we're thrilled to add someone with Tobie's expertise, experience and skill set."
In her role, Langsam will continue to provide individual and group counseling for students as well as student-athletes and provide consultation to campus partners related to student-athlete mental health and well-being.
"I have wanted to work with athletes since I was in high school," commented Langsam. "Fulfilling that goal by being able to use my full background, while also helping athletes, has been super exciting."
Earning her undergraduate degree in psychology from Lafayette College, Langsam competed as a pole vaulter on the track and field team before moving on to continue her education. Both her PhD and Masters come from Springfield College where she chose to specialize in Sport and Exercise Psychology for each. At Adelphi, she completed her Masters in Social Work in an effort to become a Licensed Masters Social Worker.
"I hope to help grow awareness and resources for student athletes' holistic mental health and well-being."
Already, Langsam has actively worked with several of the athletic teams on a group basis and appeared as a guest at the Morgan's Message ambassador group meetings.
