Garden City, N.Y. - With NE10 Rookie of the Year
Sanne Selmer Gilje sidelined and the 'Cats forfeiting two flights, the Adelphi University women's tennis team still prevailed 4-3 over CACC Tournament runner-up Jefferson University in its 2023-24 season opener Thursday in Garden City.
In an early hole from the start,
Astrid Bergh -- seeing her first collegiate action -- and
Caterina Federici still coasted to a 6-2 victory in their No. 2 doubles debut together.
At the No. 1 flight,
Katarina Liedbeck and freshman
Roisin Boyd fought back from a 4-2 deficit to break serve twice and capture a 6-4 decision, securing the team doubles point.
Then, in singles, Liedbeck and Boyd each took the crucial opening set to help further Adelphi's lead.
Before her opponent retired, Liedbeck won 6-3 at top singles. Boyd played a tiebreaker and took down reigning CACC First Team All-Conference performer Noelle Frenzel, 7-6 (7-4).
A dominant 6-1 opening set got Bergh's singles career started, and a 7-5 result in the third cemented a season-opening win for the Panthers.
With an important first win under their belts, the 'Cats open NE10 play against Franklin Pierce University at home on Saturday (Sept. 9) at 9 a.m.
