BACK-TO-BACK: Softball Downs Assumption to Win Second Straight NE10 Championship

Garden City, N.Y. - Winning its second straight and fifth overall, the Adelphi University softball program bested Assumption College on Saturday afternoon, 3-0, to earn the coveted title of Northeast-10 Conference Champions.

"I am so excited for this team and the way they came together to finish today's game," said Head Coach Carla Campagna. " They deserve everything after all their hard work they've put in leading up to this weekend."

Scoring right out of the gate, the Panthers (43-6) held on to a 2-0 lead until they were able to tack on an insurance run in the fifth and ultimately seal their fate as the 2023 NE10 Champions.

Courtney Wengryn was responsible for a double down the left field like that plated a speedy Zee Zee Shreter in the bottom of the first, as she was later brought around courtesy of a Brianna Fischer single to left center. The Greyhounds were retired in order up through the fourth inning with Lindesy Hibbs in the circle for the top-seeded Panthers.

Assumption threatened with runners on the corners in the top of the fourth, but with two outs, Hibbs sent Mackenzie Bruggeman to the dugout on a swinging strikeout. A two-out triple highlighted the fifth for the Greyhounds, but another K in the book closed the door on any scoring opportunity for the visitors.

Fischer drove in Wengryn on a triple to count for the insurance run in the bottom half of the fifth, as the Adelphi defense continued to shine, stopping any Assumption players from reaching safely. With one out to go, a ground ball went through the right side, but Shreter came up firing to first to lock in the last out of the championship.

"This team deserves it all and it's just so amazing to be a part of it," commented tournament MVP Hibbs. "I just have so much faith in my team and I know they have the same faith in me and at the end of the day, I don't want to let them down."

Hibbs set a new single season record in wins, surpassing Julie Bolduc (25, 1985) in the record books with 26. Tossing another complete game, she allowed just one hit and fanned nine.

Adelphi will take its victory to the NCAA selection show on Monday, May 8 where they anticipate a top-seed ranking in the East Region. The show will air live on NCAA.com at 10:30 a.m.
