#3 Women's Lacrosse Advances to NE10 Semifinals With Defeat of #6 New Haven

Garden City, N.Y. - Making its 13th appearance in as many years, the Adelphi University women's lacrosse program defeated the sixth-seeded Chargers of the University of New Haven, 14-11, on Tuesday to advance in the Northeast-10 Conference tournament.

The Panthers (12-5) were up 14-5 heading into the final 12 minutes of action and were tested down the stretch as New Haven (11-7) strung together six straight goals to come within three before the buzzer rang. Kelly-Ann McGrath and Kerrin Heuser were each responsible for four goals in the victory, as five other players chipped in on offense to secure the win.

Fiona Rafferty and Alex Beebe anchored a defense that held the Chargers' leading scorer, Savannah Ernst to a single tally in the quarterfinal matchup, both contributing three caused turnovers each.

New Haven managed to lock the score at three-all with a cutting Marielle Colalillo, who earned NE10 Rookie of the Week honors for the third time this season, but from 8:14 on, the Adelphi offense turned up the heat, scoring eight unanswered. The Panthers scored five in both the second and third quarters, but were outmatched down the stretch as the six-seed rattled off six consecutive to make up for its four goals spanning two quarters.

The teams were evenly matched with 14 draw control wins each but the home team held a 38-24 advantage in overall shots and committed four less turnovers throughout. Netminder for the Chargers Gabby Buscemi put together a 14-save night, challenging a consistent Panther attack.

With the victory, Adelphi heads to Syracuse, N.Y. on Friday, May 5 for a meeting with the second-seed, Le Moyne. Earlier in the season, the Panthers were down early to the Dolphins and could not overcome the deficit, ultimately dropping an 8-14 decision.
