Garden City, N.Y. - The No. 1 seed Adelphi University softball team moved to within a win of advancing to Super Regionals, following a 2-0 win over fourth-seeded Bentley University Friday at Janet L. Ficke Field.
Unlike when the 'Cats made it out of the loser's bracket last year, Adelphi is a perfect 2-0 in the East 1 Regional thus far and will play in tomorrow's final, beginning at 12 noon.
"(We just have to) play Adelphi softball and continue to do the little things, and then the big things will come," Head Coach
Carla Campagna reflected ahead of tomorrow's game.
A one-out double by
Courtney Wengryn -- who is back hovering around .400 -- broke a hitless streak of 3.1 innings by Bentley pitching to get things started in the fourth.
After waiting on a 2-2 offering,
Alexa Sacripante drilled the pitch through the right side, plating Wengryn for the game's first run.
Sacripante, who went seven consecutive games without driving in a run, accounted for the eventual game-winning RBI in Friday's contest.
An inning later,
Amanda Owens tacked on a significant insurance run, taking a two-strike pitch to the opposite field to make it a 2-0 game.
"I'm just so proud of my team. We work so hard every single day and put the most amount of effort I've ever seen in a group of girls," said Owens.
"We knew (Dahlia Fink) was going to pitch us outside. She is a phenomenal pitcher, but we went in with a game plan, and I wanted to stick with punching it to right field," Owens added on her key fifth-inning hit.
Coming of a shortened start yesterday in which she got the no-decision,
Lindsey Hibbs fired a two-hit complete-game shutout with 12 strikeouts.
The NCAA Division II East 1 Regional final gets underway from Janet L. Ficke Field on Saturday (May 12) at 12 noon.
