Garden City, N.Y. - On Saturday, the Adelphi University women's basketball team came out on the short end of a 73-69 loss to Southern New Hampshire University on Alumni Day at the Center for Recreation and Sport.
Trailing 66-64 in the final seconds,
Ty'zhea Hawkins -- usually a sure-handed foul shooter -- missed both attempts on her trip to the foul line with 34 seconds left.
Jenna Jordan then caused a tie-up on the rebound, and Adelphi had another shot at tying the game with the possession arrow in its favor. On the ensuing inbounds play,
Rolanda Robinson was whistled for an offensive foul, awarding the ball back to SNHU.
SNHU's leading foul shooter Jillian Roche went 7-for-8 at the line down the stretch to keep the Penmen's distance from the Panthers.
The first half was a tale of two quarters.
Although Adelphi trailed 18-9 after the first quarter, the Panthers had the upper hand in the following period with a 20-9 second quarter that forced a 29-all tie at halftime.
An 11-2 Adelphi run broke the seal on the second quarter, which initially leveled the score at 20-20.
Jordan made six consecutive free throws in the burst, and
Lauren Hammersley knocked down the game-tying three-pointer at the 6:49 mark.
The Panthers took the lead three times in the second quarter, but SNHU answered with the tying bucket each time.
Jordan, Hawkins and Hammersley were all in double figures again. Jordan had a double-double of 20 points and 12 rebounds. Hawkins poured in 13 points, and Hammersley dropped 12.
Christina Sanchez added a season-best eight-point line in 26 minutes of work.
Head Coach
Sade Jackson and her Adelphi squad are right back at it at home Tuesday (Feb. 7) with a 5:30 p.m. tip-off against Bentley University.
