Lakeland, FL - A pair of goals from three different players was not enough for Adelphi as the no. 2 women's lacrosse program fell 10-15 to no. 4 Florida Southern on Friday, under the lights at Berend Field.
The loss marks the second straight to the Mocs (3-0) and the third in the last four years for Adelphi, who will return to New York without a win for the first time ever.
Kristina Schweitzer opened up the scoring for Adelphi (0-2) and the visitors extended their lead to two, both courtesy of free position shots. For the contest, the Panthers were a 4-4 from the eight-meter, which included three in the opening half alone.
Florida Southern finally got on the board under the 9:30 mark but
Kerrin Heuser and
Danielle Marino each tacked on a strike to make it 4-1, Panthers.
The northerners managed to maintain a four-goal advantage throughout the third, but the Mocs cut their deficit to a pair of tallies with 4:43 left in the second quarter.
Kristina Kallansrude was responsible for Adelphi's ninth goal of the game, but Florida Southern was able to score one more time before halftime to trail by two.
Coming out of the locker room, the home team scored three while keeping Adelphi scoreless throughout. The Brown and Gold were plagued with turnovers in the third frame, contributing 10 to their 21 miscue total.
Trailing by one, the Mocs kept their foot on the gas, adding five more to make it nine unanswered over a span of 28 minutes. Adelphi found a little bit of life when
Alison Turner snuck one past Rylie Rittberg but time was not on their side as the game came to a close a little over 30 seconds later.
Despite an advantage in shots, draw controls and ground balls, the hosts finished with a better clear percentage and committed six less turnovers to seal the victory.
The Panthers will head back north to face off against no. 11 Mercy College on Saturday, Mar. 4. The Mavericks opened the season with a 17-9 win against Franklin Pierce and will take on no. 5 Le Moyne College on Feb. 25.
