Matthews, N.C. - In its bid to reach the national championship game, the No. 14 Adelphi University women's soccer team suffered a 1-0 loss at the hands of No. 7 Washburn University in an NCAA Division II National Semifinal on Thursday at the Sportsplex at Matthews.
The decisive goal came ten minutes into the second half, ending a streak of eight consecutive one-goal victories for Adelphi (15-4-5) this season.
Even following
Krista Aliscio's brilliant save on Washburn's leading point-getter Khloe Schuckman at the crossbar, Mackinly Rohn tapped in the rebound for the Ichabods.
"I'm so proud of all the players and staff for getting us to this point in our season. To even help put us in this position, it's something we really value," Head Coach
Brooke DeRosa reflected.
"The perseverance, discipline and work ethic they have is something they've been doing all season long, but there was some disconnect in possession that let us down."'
Washburn maintained the edge in possession at 55 percent and outshot Adelphi by a 20-3 count.
Aliscio stood out in goal across all ninety minutes for the 'Cats, saving ten shots to hold Washburn (21-3-1) to just the one goal.
"We had a good game defensively. It was a great shot, but they put away the rebound," Aliscio stated. "It means everything to us to get here. We took it one game at a time, and really put everything we had into every ninety minutes we were given."
The two teams went into the intermission scoreless, but
Dylann Trahey cleared a free ball off the goalline to keep Washburn off the scoreboard.
Junior midfielder
Alexis Hellman kept possession for Adelphi in the midfield, and accounted for all three shots for her team on the day.
The loss concludes the 2023 campaign for the Panthers, who advanced to the Final Four of the NCAA Division II Women's Soccer Championship for the first time since 2004.
