Garden City, N.Y. - In an instant classic, the Adelphi University men's basketball team held on to defeat Bentley University by a 69-66 final in its NE10 showdown at the Center for Recreation and Sport on Saturday afternoon.
The Panthers came out storming in this one, with a
Seth Brown three-pointer capping off an opening 15-4 run. The home team controlled the pace for the rest of the half, owning the rebound advantage, 20-12, including four on the offensive end.
Following a late shot from deep, the Falcons trailed by only three heading into the break.
Starting out hot continued to be a trend for the Brown and Gold, opening the second half on a 10-0 run this time to lead by 13 with under 15 to play. The visitors weren't quite done yet, continuing to claw away and cutting the deficit to six by the halfway mark of the period.
Bentley waited until the six-minute mark to grab its first lead of the game after another three-point field goal.
After Zach Laput scored his 18th point from the stripe, the Falcons maintained their three-point lead with just 2:37 to play.
Mason Jackson's lay-up with 47 seconds showing on the clock put the hosts back on top.
Conor Regan's two vital insurance free throws gave the Panthers a three-point lead with under 30 seconds.
After the teams exchanged free throws once more, Laput took a potential game-tying three-point shot that fell well short of the net, preserving the win for the Brown and Gold.
Head Coach
Dave Duke and Adelphi will now hit the road looking to improve their 3-1 record in conference play on Tuesday (Dec. 5), when they face New Haven in West Haven, Conn. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
