Garden City, N.Y. - For the fourth time in as many games, the Adelphi University men's soccer team came out on the short side of a one-goal game.
In Saturday's NE10 Tournament quarterfinal, the third-seeded Panthers fell 1-0 to No. 6 seed Southern Connecticut State University at Motamed Field, ending the team's 10-game unbeaten streak against the Owls.
The result puts the opening round of the NE10 Championship to bed, in which the No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 seeds all lost in their respective quarterfinals. Even No. 1 seed and top-ranked Franklin Pierce University was pushed to the brink in a shootout with AIC.
Adelphi had opportunities right from the get-go, but failed to convert through ninety minutes.Â
On a quick counter from the onset,
Victor Castel put a strike just over the crossbar.
Aleksei Armas also missed on an opportunity at the far post in the initial moments of the game.
The visitors broke through with the deciding goal in the opening minutes of the second half.
Only 2:19 into the period, Omar Razo took a throw-in from the near sideline in which Matthew Surette's flick header led to a 1-v-1 for SCSU's Zico Groenveld, who tucked a shot underneath Adelphi keeper
Daniel De La Heras to break the stalemate.
It was the Owls' first goal against the Panthers in two years and, ultimately, SCSU's first time posting a clean sheet against Adelphi since 2017.
The loss concludes the 2023 season for
Gary Book's squad at 9-8-1 overall. Stay tuned to
