Garden City, N.Y. - In its eighth appearance under the direction of Head Coach
Danielle MacKnight, the Adelphi University volleyball team unfortunately fell short in the Northeast-10 Championship game, dropping a 3-1 heartbreaker to the University of New Haven.
Today's game marks the fourth time in championship history that the two teams have met in the finals, with New Haven taking a 2-1 lead in titles won.
Lilyen McCarthy, who finished with a team leading 15 kills and .382 hitting percentage was named to the 2023 NE10 All-Tournament Team.
Adelphi found themselves behind 0-2 in the match after the Chargers took a convincing 25-13 first set, which was followed up with a 25-18 performance.
With
Jamie Yonker at the service line, the Panthers rattled off a 6-0 run in the third set that put them ahead by five. New Haven came as close as two, but that early lead proved to be the difference maker in the frame.
Samantha Meehan, McCarthy and
Macarty McQueen all produced timely kills that put the home team up 22-13. Trading points down the stretch, Adelphi managed to close out a 25-16 victory to stay alive in the championship game.
In a set that went tit-for-tat til the very end, an untimely service error broke the 20-20 score, sending the Chargers on a four-point run to earn match point.
Delaney Kiendra recorded a kill and
Noelle Alberda teamed up with McCarthy for a stop at the net, but a smartly placed kill earned New Haven its seventh NE10 title and first since 2017.
MacKnight's program was ranked atop the East Region in this week's rankings. The program will now await its fate in the NCAA Division II East Region tournament with the announcement of the selections scheduled for Monday, Nov. 20 at 7:00 p.m.
