Pleasantville, N.Y. - The Adelphi University women's basketball team was ultimately unable to make up a five-point difference Friday in what was a season-opening 75-70 loss at the hands of Caldwell University at the Conference Challenge at Pace University's Goldstein Fitness Center.
The Panthers (0-1) will have the opportunity to right the ship in twenty-four hours against Bloomfield College.
Freshman guard
Isabella Asencio led the 'Cats with 16 points in her collegiate debut.
Jenna Jordan and
Rolanda Robinson dropped in 14 points apiece.
It all went downhill in the second half, after Adelphi shot a sparkling 50.0 percent (14-of-28) in the opening twenty to bring a 39-36 lead into the intermission.
The team struggled offensively over the final two quarters, shooting 30.0 percent from the floor and a goose egg of an 0-for-8 from three-point range.
Adelphi stayed within striking distance of Caldwell, despite the second-half offensive woes. An Asencio lay-up even gave the Brown and Gold a 56-55 advantage on the initial possession of the fourth quarter.
Neither team led by more than five points in the fourth quarter, but Caldwell's perfect 6-for-6 stretch at the line in the final seconds sealed the deal.
The Cougars dominated the glass, where Caldwell owned a 42-33 differential in rebounding. An astonishing 21 lead changes occurred throughout the contest.
Head Coach
Sade Jackson and the Panthers meet Bloomfield tomorrow (Nov. 11) at 7 p.m. to close out play at the Conference Challenge.
