Field Hockey Grabs Upset Win Over Bentley in NE10 Quarterfinals, 2-1

Waltham, Mass. - Following two clutch third-quarter goals, the Adelphi University field hockey team upset No. 3 Bentley University in its NE10 Championship quarterfinal match-up on Tuesday evening, by a final score of 2-1.

With the playoff tension in the air, the two defenses didn't allow many chances in the opening frame. The visiting defense didn't allow a single shot in the first quarter.

However, following a foul on the Brown and Gold, Bentley was granted a penalty stroke. Emily Crowell sniped one home from the stripe past starting goalie Fiona Mannion into the upper left-hand corner, giving the Falcons an early lead. Despite two shots on goal, nothing was getting past Mia Trottie in the Adelphi zone after the first quarter.

Despite yearning for more chances, both sides yet again didn't allow much, as each team only got off one penalty corner. After both teams combined for just three shots in the second frame, the sides headed into the break with the Blue and White still leading 1-0.

Coming out of the half, the Panthers fought on every ball, looking to creep back into the offensive zone. Earning a penalty corner nearly halfway into the third quarter, Amanda Lee took a pass from Ali Nagy and fired it from the top of the scoring circle to even the game at 1-all. Though Bentley tallied four more shots in the period, Mannion made sure none of them went through, saving two.

Just before the period ended, the visitors were granted a final penalty corner. Sydney Rossacci found herself in the right place at the right time once more, as she tallied a goal in her third-straight game, giving Adelphi its first lead of the night at 2-1.

Heading into the final frame, the Falcons looked to ramp up the pressure to try and tie things up. They totaled five shots, the most of any other period, three of which came in the final 2:30. Not letting the Panther defense breathe, three penalty corners were granted to the home team in the final two minutes.

On the final one of the game, Bentley's Hannah Blomquist found herself free right next to Mannion, shooting a one-timer with seven seconds left that went just to the right of the goal. When the final whistle blew a couple of seconds later, the Brown and Gold had secured the upset, their first NE10 tournament win over Bentley since 2014.

Head Coach Jess Mulhern and the Panthers now travel to No. 2 Saint Anselm College on Friday (Nov. 3) for the semifinals. Stay tuned to AUPanthers.com for more information regarding a game time and streaming links.
