Garden City, N.Y. - On the backs of some timely goals from the visitors, the Adelphi University field hockey team fell in its bout with Bentley University on Senior Day Saturday afternoon, by a final score of 3-0.
It was a slow start for the Panthers in this one, as they attempted just one shot in the first half. The Falcon defense held the 'Cats in check all 30 minutes, allowing not a single shot on goal or penalty corner to Adelphi.
Bentley hit the ground running offensively, and opened the scoring four minutes into the second quarter. As a unit, the Adelphi defense allowed seven shots -- four of them on goal -- and three corners in the first half. The Panthers went into the half only trailing 1-0, on the strength of solid play from Amanda Montiel -- who made three saves.
The momentum picked up for Adelphi in the second half, as the offense showed signs of life. Sydney Rossacci just missed the goal wide left off a deflection.
Shortly after, Bentley cleaned up its defense and put the pressure back on the Panthers. Montiel continued her excellent play in the frame, making two more great saves, keeping the Brown and Gold in the game. With two minutes left in the third quarter, Bentley finally broke through, getting one past Montiel, making the score 2-0 to end the third quarter.
Bentley set the tone again in the final 15 minutes, controlling the ball for the first five, keeping pressure on the 'Cats defense and eventually setting themselves up for a penalty stroke, which they would capitalize on to make the score 3-0. Adelphi made a couple late pushes into the offensive half, but wasn't able to convert on any of the opportunities, leaving Bentley victorious.
Head Coach Jess Mulhern and the Panthers will finish their homestand on Tuesday (Oct. 24), when they take on University of New Haven. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
