Oceanside, N.Y. - The top-seeded Adelphi University women's tennis team secured its berth to the NE10 Championship final Friday, following a victorious effort against No. 4 seed Assumption University in the semifinal round at Point Set Racquet Club.
Playing to decision in the postseason, the Panthers (10-1) shut out the Greyhounds, 4-0, to advance to their second NE10 Championship final appearance in three years.
Adelphi quickly had the doubles point in hand, after the team's No. 2 and No. 3 doubles pairings swiftly ousted their opposition.
The No. 2 team of
Sanne Selmer Gilje and
Caterina Federici first blanked Assumption's Caitlin Sze and Caroline Mader, 6-0.
Astrid Bergh and
Carolina Chaves then won in convincing fashion over twin sisters Carolina and Danielle de Souza at the No. 3 flight, 6-2.
In singles,
Roisin Boyd won eight consecutive games at No. 3, after trailing 5-4 in the first set to knock off Beren Vapur, 7-5, 6-2.
Katarina Liedbeck dominated her first set at No. 2, winning 6-2, before battling back from a 3-0 second-set deficit to take the tiebreak, 7-6 (7-5).
Bergh overcame a slow start at No. 4 to cement the final point for the 'Cats. Despite losing the first set, Bergh went the distance for a match-clinching 2-6, 6-1, 6-4 result.
In a showdown of the tournament's top two seeds, Adelphi will host No. 2 seed Southern New Hampshire University in the NE10 Championship on Sunday (Oct. 22). Details on a time and location are still being finalized, but stay tuned to
