Mansfield, Mass. - As the 'Cats gear up for today's final tune-up before the conference tournament begins, the Adelphi University women's tennis team learned Sunday that it was in possession of the sought-after No. 1 seed in this week's NE10 Championship.
Even following the departure of three impact seniors from Adelphi's line-up, the Panthers were still a near-perfect 8-1 in league matches in 2023, earning them a share of the NE10's regular-season title alongside Southern New Hampshire and New Haven.
The tiebreak between the three schools came down to a comparison of wins against one another in the regular season. It was Adelphi's 5-2 victory at SNHU back on Sept. 22 that gave the Panthers the slight edge in the mini-conference with eight wins.
In possession of the No. 1 overall seed for the first time since 2019, Adelphi will get a bye into the semifinals, where it will play the winner of No. 4 seed Assumption and No. 5 seed Saint Anselm on Friday (Oct. 20) at 2 p.m. in Oceanside, N.Y.
The result of its head-to-head win against New Haven this season earned SNHU the No. 2 seed and the other first-round bye.
Each of Adelphi's six starters have one or fewer losses on their 2023-24 resume, either in singles or doubles. First-year standouts
Astrid Bergh and
Roisin Boyd are an astounding 8-0 and 7-1, respectively, in NE10 singles competition.
Caterina Federici and
Katarina Liedbeck are both 7-1, as well.
While Liedbeck and Boyd have had a stronghold on No. 1 doubles after their regional-winning performance at ITA's, the No. 2 and No. 3 pairings of Federici and
Sanne Selmer Gilje, and Bergh and
Carolina Chaves only have one loss on their NE10 registers this fall.
A champion will be crowned in the NE10 Championship final on Sunday, Oct. 22 at the highest remaining seed.
