Colchester, VT - Despite being relatively cold in the second half from three-point range, the Adelphi University men's basketball team used a dagger from
Matthew Price with 1.9 seconds in regulation to defeat Saint Michael's College on Saturday.
Leading scorer for the Panthers was first year
Elijah Lewis, who accounted for 17 as the lone player in double-figures for the visiting team. After the victory, both teams stand at an identical 9-11 overall with a 3-9 mark in conference play.
The Purple Knights scored 30 points inside the paint and also out re-bounded Adelphi 39-29, but were stunned in the final seconds of action.
Adelphi's largest lead of the opening frame occurred at the 1:11 mark as a result of a
Jake Hlywiak shot from beyond the arc that saw the hosts trailing by eight. Just 11 minutes prior, the roles were reversed as Saint Michael's held a nine-point advantage in the contest.
Lewis's three at 19:43 opened the second half with the team's eventual largest lead, as the competition kept it close for a full 20 minutes. A scoring drought that spanned 10 minutes played out in favor of the home team, as they rattled off a 16-6 run to cut into the Panther deficit.
Darrel Yepdo landed one of two shots from the charity stripe to make it a one-possession game with 30 seconds to go, but
Dayshaun Walton grabbed a key offensive board that was kicked out to Price for the gamewinner as time was rapidly expiring. Saint Mike's got over mid-court and threw up a shot, but it was not enough as the contest came to a close.
The men's basketball team will be back on its home court on Tuesday, Jan. 24 when they host the University of New Haven. In celebration of the start of the spring semester, the department will put on its annual Welcome Back Bash, with in-game contests, giveaways, raffle prizes and more.
