Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University volleyball team held its opponent to a negative hitting percentage in two of the three sets on Tuesday, resulting in a 3-0 sweep over Pace University.
Adelphi (7-8, 1-1 NE10) picked up its first conference victory inside the Center for Recreation and Sports, using an 8-1 advantage in aces and blocks to defeat the Setters (2-11, 0-2 NE10).
Macarty McQueen led the squad with eight kills, adding six digs on defense as
Brenna Valsted paced the offense with 27 assists. At the net,
Noelle Alberda was responsible for five block assists, as five others contributed to the block party.
Pace was battling it out in the opening set after taking a narrow lead, but an attack error made way for a 6-0 run for the Panthers that ultimately put them in control for the remainder of the set. In that stretch, libero
Jamie Yonker had three service aces herself contributing to the team's eight overall.
The home team jumped out to an early lead in the second, but the Setters stayed within four points throughout the set only dropping a 25-21 decision. Alberda notched the final solo block to move the Brown and Gold to 2-0 overall in the match.
The third and final set was all Adelphi as the squad opened up with an 8-0 run, with Valsted at the serving line. They then put together another four-point stretch with three attack errors from the other side to make it a 12-point advantage.
Jamaya Harris's service ace made it 20-5 in favor of the hosts, who closed out the contest with five of the final seven points courtesy of kills from
Samantha Collins and McQueen.
The Panthers will head upstate for an NE10 matchup with the College of Saint Rose - scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 1 at 11:00 a.m.
