Garden City, N.Y. - A pair of goals from
Victor Castel and
Rodrigo Descalzo Rocca spearheaded the attack for the Adelphi University men's soccer team Thursday night in a season-opening 4-0 win over Wilmington University on Day 1 of the Brown and Gold Invitational at Motamed Field.
In Castel's Adelphi debut, the forward not only scored twice, but also assisted on both Descalzo goals for a six-point night. Descalzo picked up from where he left off, netting a brace tonight to increase his career total to 16 goals with the Panthers.
Adelphi (1-0) dominated in the early stages of the match and Castel only needed 1:06 to get his feet underneath him, when he put back a
Benji Jones rebound that got the hosts on the board first.
Ten minutes later, Castel found himself on the distribution side, after placing a perfect diagonal towards Descalzo, whose header beat the Wilmington keeper to make it a 2-0 game.
Although the Panthers were outpossessed in the first 45 minutes,
Daniel De La Heras stopped all three shots on target -- in a span of 3:36 -- to keep the Wildcats off the board.
The Brown and Gold turned the tables on possession in the second half and outshot Wilmington by an overwhelming 10-4 margin. Descalzo and Castel each supplied another goal early in the half to pull away.
The clean sheet was Adelphi's first shutout in a season opener since 2013, when the Panthers won a 1-0 decision over Molloy University in their NCAA Division II debut.
Head Coach
Gary Book's squad will get a day off, before concluding the Brown and Gold Invitational with a 6 p.m. match against Post University on Saturday (Aug. 27) at Motamed Field.
