Albany, N.Y. - The Adelphi University baseball team seemed destined to drop a pair, but came back from a 6-3 deficit to earn a split of the season's final two games at The College of Saint Rose on Saturday at Bob Bellizzi Field in Albany.
The Panthers now conclude the regular season at 28-11-2 overall and 17-6-1 against NE10 opposition.
Adelphi now awaits the results of the series between Southern Connecticut and New Haven, which will determine whether the Brown and Gold earns the No. 1 or No. 2 seed in the upcoming NE10 Championship.
Game 1: Adelphi 0, Saint Rose 4
A seven-inning complete-game shutout from Saint Rose starting pitcher Randall Alejo highlighted the opening game of the doubleheader.
The Panthers managed only four hits against the right-hander. None of the Adelphi baserunners advanced past first base.
Andrew Williams started for the Brown and Gold and retired Saint Rose in order in the first, before allowing a run in the second and three in the third.
Gavin Graff continued his impressive relief work of late with three scoreless frames. His ERA for the year now sits at an even 3.00.
Game 2: Adelphi 8, Saint Rose 6
In need of a split to keep the pressure on SCSU this weekend, the Panthers mounted a come-from-behind victory.
Although a two-RBI double from
Tim Feliz had Adelphi within 4-3 in the third, Saint Rose responded with a pair of unearned runs that gave the hosts a 6-3 advantage.
A dropped ball by the Saint Rose shortstop on what could have been a double play in the sixth started to get the Panthers back in it. The visitors ultimately loaded the bases and plated a pair, cutting the deficit to 6-5.
An inning later,
Anthony Cipri evened things up at 6-all with a sacrifice fly, after back-to-back one-out singles by
Alec Maag and
Johnny Catuosco.
Maag then delivered the go-ahead double in the ninth to score
Kyle Olson, who led off the frame with a double of his own.
Alex Rende then pinch-ran for Maag and added some insurance on a Cipri safety squeeze.
Tommy O'Sullivan made his first appearance on the hill since Apr. 15 and worked three scoreless with four strikeouts for his first win of 2022.
As the Panthers now prepare for the NE10 Tournament, Head Coach
Bill Ianniciello's squad won five of its six series this season against NE10 Southwest Division opponents.
