Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University softball team dropped Game 1 of the East Super Regional on Janet L. Ficke Field Thursday afternoon, 1-0.
With runners on first and third a costly throwing error for the Panthers (45-13) allowed an unearned run to cross the plate and ultimately win the game.
Amanda Owens had the only hit of the game for Adelphi in the first inning with a bloop double that landed in shallow left field. The Panthers were forced into nine pop ups by Wilmington's Kylee Gunkel.
Wilmington (38-18) had eight hits to Adelphi's one on the game. The Wildcats left a total of eight runners on base - six of which were in scoring position.
Claire Fon pitched the first two full innings before being replaced by
Lindsey Hibbs in the third with one out and runners on first and second. Fon took the loss with the one run crossing the plate during the second inning.
Adelphi and Wilmington will return to Ficke Field tomorrow for a 12 p.m. start and a 2:30 p.m. game to follow if necessary.
