No. 5 Women's Lax Bounces Back with a 13-6 Victory Over FPU

Garden City, N.Y. - The no. 5 Adelphi women's lacrosse team bounced back from a weekend loss against the Ravens of Franklin Pierce in their penultimate matchup of the regular season, by a final decision of 13-6. 

Leading scorer for the Panthers (14-1, 11-1) Kristina Kallansrude tallied four goals, marking a new career-high for the midfielder. Other offensive help came from Izzy Grant and Christina McCabe, who each chipped in two goals. 

The Adelphi women's lacrosse team has won every game it has ever played against the Franklin Pierce, dating back to their first matchup on Apr. 5, 2009, which resulted in a 24-4 decision. Throughout the 12 straight victories against the Ravens, today's output was the lowest amount of goals for the home team. Their largest margin of victory came on Apr. 1,7 2011, from a final score of 24-3. 

Kerrin Heuser came out of the gates ready to score, as she put the home team on the board first, getting past goalkeeper Erin Blake less than a minute into the game. McCabe and Emily Beier followed up with their own goals to complete a 3-0 run. The Ravens responded after to cut the lead to 3-1 heading into the second quarter. 

Franklin Pierce settled in with Adelphi's defensive pressure as Savannah Ernst got past Emma Lemanski for their second score of the contest. A five-goal differential quickly turned into a two-point advantage, as the clock continued to wind down.  The home team showed life as Fiona Rafferty netted her third goal of the season to extend their lead to three heading into the second half. 

An evenly matched third quarter resulted in a 2-2 scoring output. Adelphi outshot Franklin Pierce 11-7, including four more shots on goal. New goalkeeper Megan Bacik, finished with six saves in the frame, while the Panthers forced two turnovers. Jamie Mecca capitalized on a free position opportunity with a minute left to give her team a 9-6 lead heading into the final 15 minutes. 

The Panther defense played a perfect fourth quarter shutting out the Raven attack, while the offense continued their scoring effort. Out of the four goals scored by Adelphi in the final frame, Kallansrude was responsible for a hat trick to contribute to her new single-game record.

The Adelphi women's lacrosse team will look to close out the regular season at home on Apr. 30 against American International. Opening draw is set for 1:00 p.m. but the team and department will honor the members of the graduating class at approximately 12:40 p.m.
