Garden City, N.Y. - On a cold, bitter day at the ballpark, the Adelphi University baseball team wrapped up its nine-game homestand with an 8-6 victory over Queens College in non-conference action at William J. Bonomo Memorial Field in Garden City.
The Panthers (13-4) and Knights (8-9) nearly finished tied in the hit column and left a combined 25 runners on base throughout the afternoon.
However, Adelphi jumped out to a fast start and never looked back in capturing its eighth win in as many games.
After the first two batters reached safely in the home half of the first,
Jack Ryan drove a ball out to right that carried over the fence for a three-run homer. Ryan, who now has two homers in his last three games, has raised his batting average almost 200 points in a week.
The Panthers led 4-0 following their opening turn at-bat and grew it to 6-1 an inning later, after
Kyle Olson and
Michael Draskin each drove in a run with a triple and sacrifice fly, respectively.
Queens never seemed to go away in the contest. In fact, the Knights brought the tying runs to the plate in the eighth and ninth innings.
In the eighth,
Max Steele was summoned from the bullpen in an 8-5 game with the bases loaded. He induced a weak grounder to
Anthony Cipri that got Adelphi out of the inning.
Then, in the ninth,
Kevin Glasser inherited a runner on first and still converted his second-straight save opportunity. Despite loading the bases, Glasser froze pinch-hitter and potential go-ahead run Dennis Lynch for the game-ending strikeout.
Steven Murphy picked up his first win of the season in the process. He came on in relief of starter
Jordan Falco and worked 3.2 innings without allowing an earned run and struck out five.
Head Coach
Bill Ianniciello and the Panthers will now resume NE10 play, when they travel to Pleasantville this weekend (Apr. 2-3) for a four-game set at Pace University. A doubleheader will kick off the series on Saturday at 11 a.m.
