Wilmington, Del. - After clinching a close 10-6 nine inning win, the Adelphi University softball team dropped Game 2 in a regional battle at Wilmington University on Sunday afternoon.
Game 1: Adelphi 10, Wilmington 6
a 6-5 deficit quickly turned into a 6-6 tie between the Panthers (11-7) and Wildcats (5-9), as
Ziara Shreter hit a clutch triple and scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of
Lauren O'Neill.
A scoreless eighth inning resulted in freshman
Courtney Murphy starting the top of the ninth of second base with
Ashley Lombardi at the plate. The Rookie advanced to third on Lombardi's sacrifice bunt, and moved over an extra base one batter later to give the Brown and Gold the first lead they had seen since the first inning.
Courtney Wengryn poked a RBI single into the outfield to make it 8-6 in favor of the Panthers. Sophomore
Faith Camilleri stepped to the plate after Wengryn crushed a clutch two-run homer to seal the deal in Game 1.
Camilleri's ninth inning homer was her second two-run shot of the game. The Sophomore went 2-for-5 with two home runs and four RBIs.
Wilmington advanced their runner from second to third in the bottom of the inning, but ultimately were unable to send a run across the dish.
Adelphi and Wilmington both had nine hits apiece, and the Wildcats had seven runners left stranded to Adelphi's five.
Lindsey Hibbs earned the start in Game 1 and shared the mound with
Claire Fon. The pair combined for just two earned runs and four strikeouts.
Game 2: Adelphi 5, Wilmington 7
Adelphi took an early 3-0 lead due in part to
Faith Camilleri once again. She led off the second inning with a two-bagger to left center and scored two batters later along with
Alexa Sacripante, off
Jaden Farhat's RBI double.
Wilmington responded with three outfield singles that turned into four runners crossing the plate. The Wildcats push three more across in the bottom the fifth off back-to-back RBI doubles and another outfield single.
During the next frame, Camilleri rocked yet another double to get the offense going.
Jaden Farhat and
Angela Lignelli hit consecutive ground outs to the shortstop, but both resulted in RBIs to bring the Panthers within two for a 7-5 game.
Claire Fon earned the start again in Game 2 and lasted two innings before Hibbs came in for the next 2.2.
Brianna Pearson ended the game in the circle and tossed the lone strikeout of the game.
Adelphi will return home to host Saint Thomas Aquinas College on Tuesday, Mar. 22 for a 2:30 p.m. doubleheader.
