West Chester, Pa. - The No. 3 seed West Chester University of Pennsylvania applied constant pressure in defeating the No. 6 seed Adelphi University field hockey team, 10-1, in the first round of the 2022 NCAA Division II Championship at Vonnie Gros Field on Sunday afternoon.
The No. 4 nationally-ranked Golden Rams (15-4) outshot No. 9 nationally-ranked Adelphi 24-4 on frame in the contest.
Adelphi's
Mirthe Karstens and
Amanda Montiel combined for 13 of the Cats' 14 saves - including one defensive save by
Kylie Peregoy.
It took only less than six minutes for the Golden Rams to break the ice. The Brown and Gold's lone goal of the game occurred in the second quarter, when
Bianca Bachisin converted a penalty stroke to give the Long Island native her 11th goal of the season.
Adelphi was within 3-1 at halftime, but West Chester found the back of the cage seven times in the second half, by way of five different goal scorers.
With the loss, the Panthers complete their season with a 13-9 overall record -- which included the program's first-ever NE10 Championship.
"Our coaching staff is incredibly proud of this group of young women coming together, growing and learning from our opportunities in uniform," Head Coach
Jess Mulhern said following the loss. "It takes everyone on the team to win a championship and we are proud of the focus and buy-in to our game plan heading into playoff season."
"We're grateful that our student-athletes in their final season were able to complete their playing careers as one of the five teams to earn a bid to to the NCAAs and thank them for what they have given to our program - heart, passion, effort, energy, character, and so much more."
Mulhern and her squad will look to defend their NE10 Championship next season. For more information on the field hockey program, please continue to check
