Albany, N.Y. - The No. 5 seed Adelphi University women's soccer team couldn't seem to find its rhythm against No. 4 seed Mercy College in a 3-0 defeat Friday in the first round of the 2022 NCAA Division II Championship at the Plumeri Sports Complex.
The Mavericks (13-2-2), who are in the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the third-consecutive year, overwhelmed the Panthers (12-6-2) with a near-season-high 20 shots.
Graduate keeper
Lydia Fraga Cordoba was tested throughout the entire first half, but kept her team in it by only conceding one goal.
Cordoba finished the afternoon with eight saves -- matching her second-highest single-game output this season.
Adelphi managed just three shots on target though the entire 90-minute match.Â
As the clock ticked under five minutes left,
Dylann Trahey was thought to have been taken down at the edge of the 18-yard box. The center official did not blow the whistle to award a potential game-tying penalty.
On the ensuing counter, Mercy's Claudia McKail got free for a 1-v-1 with Cordoba and planted a right-footed shot inside the far post to expand the Mavericks' lead late.
Overall, Mercy maintained possession in the attacking third at a 35 percent clip in the match to Adelphi's 17 percent.
The Panthers end the 2022 campaign at 12-6-2 overall, marking their first double-digit win season since 2017. Along the way, Adelphi made its fourth appearance all-time in the finals of the NE10 Championship (first since 2015).
