Volleyball Takes Down Chestnut Hill in Home Opener, 3-0

Garden City, N.Y. - Back in front of a home crowd for the first time in nearly two years, the Adelphi University volleyball program improved to 4-1 Tuesday evening, after defeating Chestnut Hill College 3-0.

Delaney Kiendra was the lone member of the Panther squad to reach double-digit kills as she finished with 10, as Samantha Collins and Samantha Meehan each chipped in six of their own. Kambel Fiser paced the offense, accounting for 24 assists while Northeast-10 Conference Libero of the Week Jamie Yonker capped the sweep with 16 digs.

Sets one and three were nearly identical at the start, with the Panthers (4-1) jumping out to an early advantage over the Griffins (0-1). Attack errors plagued the visiting team in the opening set, as they only managed 12 kills compared to 11 attacking miscues. Chesnut Hill slowly chipped away at the Adelphi lead in the opener however, coming as close as three but another falter at the net allowed the home team to squeak away with a 25-21 victory.

The second set proved to be Adelphi's best on offense, as the team posted a .293 hitting percentage courtesy of 14 kills and just two errors. Jamaya Harris used a service ace in a four-point stretch to give the Panthers an edge, and a stretch of three consecutive kills from Kiendra made it an eight-point game. The hosts managed to earn five of the final seven points in the set, capped with a service ace from rookie Jaydin Nowak to advance to 2-0 in the match.

Jumping out ahead once more were the Panthers in the third and eventual final set, as another ace from the Brown and Gold (Diana Migliozzi) gave the home team an eight-point lead at 19-11. The Griffins staged a comeback, but were held offf due to a final block from Lilyen McCarthy and Fiser to conclude the game.

Adelphi continues their homestand with a non-conference matchup featuring Mercy College on Thursday, Sept. 9. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m.
