Manchester, N.H. - The 2021 season came to a close for the Adelphi University baseball team Friday with a finalist finish in the NE10 Championship, after dropping two to Southern New Hampshire University at Penmen Field.
Although the results didn't favor the Panthers, Adelphi's
Kevin Glasser was rewarded for his work in the classroom. Glasser was named the recipient of the NE10's Elite 24 Award, which is presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average at each of the league's 24 championship sites. He carries a 3.79 GPA as a Biology major.
Meanwhile,
Nicolas Luc and
Jack Ryan were both recognized to the NE10 All-Championship Team for their efforts in the postseason.
Game 1: Adelphi 0, SNHU 10
Although SNHU stranded two runners in scoring position in the first, the Penmen broke through against the Panthers in the third.
A lead-off walk issued by
Josh Rovner was followed by back-to-back RBI doubles, before a two-run homer by Dakota Mulcay capped the inning.
Mulcay would add another two-run jolt in the fifth, which extended the SNHU lead to 6-0.
In Adelphi's half of the fourth, the Panthers loaded the bases with three consecutive singles and brought the tying run to the plate.
Tyler Becker hit a shallow ball to right that Sam Henrie laid out for to keep the runners at their stations.
Tim O'Connor then struck out and
Cooper Johnson flied out to center, stranding the bags full.
Rovner came out in the third and took the loss in the decision. He surrendered two runs and struck out a pair.
Andrew Williams went 3.1 in relief and
Troy Simpson pitched 2.1 frames out of the pen.
Despite being held without a run, Adelphi collected eight hits in the opener.
Kyle Olson,
Michael Draskin and Johnson all accounted for two each.
Game 2: Adelphi 3, SNHU 9
The Panthers fell into an early 2-0 hole, but loaded the bases against SNHU's Nick Artymowicz with one out in the third and fifth innings.
Adelphi only had one run to show for it though, after Johnson scored on a wild pitch that cut the deficit in half at 2-1.
SNHU responded right away in the sixth, by way of a lead-off solo homer from Michael LaRocca. Luc subsequently exited from the game upon giving up the homer.
It didn't stop there. Two batters later, Alex Kennedy took
Michael Storms deep for two runs on a line drive that just cleared the right-field fence.
The Penmen eventually opened up a 7-1 advantage, behind a skied two-run homer to left by Marcus Chavez.
This concludes the 2021 campaign for the Adelphi University baseball team. With
Bill Ianniciello serving as interim head coach, the Panthers posted a 14-8 record and rattled off a 10-2 stretch over their final 12 games that rallied the team to a second-straight NE10 Southwest Division regular-season championship. It was Adelphi's first appearance in the NE10 Championship final since 2014.
