Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball Goes Yard Again in Sweep of AIC; 11-7, 9-2

Springfield, Mass. - After hitting seven homers in the first two games of the series, the Adelphi University baseball team came back Sunday to hit another three long balls in a sweep of American International College in Northeast-10 Conference action at Richard F. Bedard Field.

The Panthers (12-12, 10-7 NE10), who prevailed 11-7 and 9-2 in the two games, have now won six of eight, including their last two series. Adelphi has also moved into sole possession of second place in the NE10 Southwest Division standings and sits at .500 or better for the first time since Mar. 14.

Game 1: Adelphi 11, AIC 7
In another high-scoring affair between the two squads, Adelphi -- much like yesterday's opener -- got out to another outstanding start.

The Panthers led 6-0 out of the gate. Jose Matos blasted his first collegiate homer -- a three-run homer -- in the first inning and Tim Feliz and Michael Draskin both drove in runs in the second.

And, in similar fashion, AIC mounted another astonishing comeback. This time, the result differed.

Although AIC rallied to tie the score at 7-7, Feliz drilled a solo homer in the sixth that proved to be the difference-maker in the seven-inning contest.

It was Feliz's second homer in as many games. Additionally, Feliz is batting .562 (18-of-32) over his last eight games, with six doubles, three homers, 10 RBI and eight runs scored.

In the seventh, Cooper Johnson added a two-run homer for good measure.-- his second in four games -- that expanded the Adelphi lead to 11-7.

Kevin Glasser and Michael Storms combined for 4.1 innings of spectacular relief. The duo combined to allow only one run and struck out four. Glasser earned the win in the decision, while Storms collected his third save. Tommy O'Sullivan made the start and let up four earned runs in 2.2 innings of work.

Game 2: Adelphi 9, AIC 2 - F/8
A rain delay lengthened the second game, which ultimately had to be called after eight innings, on account of darkness.

The two teams remained scoreless until the top of the third, when Johnson and Nick Gavilla roped back-to-back RBI doubles, following a double by Tyler Becker to lead off the inning, that got the Panthers out to a 2-0 advantage.

Adelphi wasn't done in the frame. Two batters later, Gavilla scored on a fielder's choice by Feliz to extend the lead to 3-0.

AIC got one back in its half of the third, but that turned out to be the hosts' only run-producing inning until the ninth.

In the meantime, the Panthers went to work and added a run in the fourth, another in the fifth and a statement four-run outburst in the eighth, highlighted by a Draskin two-RBI single.

Max Steele tossed three strong innings before the delay and struck out three. Troy Simpson took the hill upon resumption of play and fired five innings of one-run ball to earn the win.

The Panthers are set to play one more regular-season series before the NE10 Tournament. Adelphi will match up next week (May 7-8) against Pace University with a pair of doubleheaders, starting Friday at 1 p.m.
