Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University men's lacrosse program held Southern New Hampshire scoreless in the third quarter en route to a 12-9 victory in the Northeast-10 Conference quarterfinals Saturday afternoon on Motamed Field.
The scoreless third frame was largely in part due to freshman
Kyle Cash, who made his collegiate debut between the pipes for the Panthers (7-2) this afternoon. In 30 minutes of work, he made nine saves and earned the victory.
Offensively the team was led by
Gordon Purdie, Jr. who scored four times and added two helpers for a game-high six points. Seven other players scored for Adelphi with
Nicolas Racalbuto and
Jack Hipchen each adding three points for the home team. For the Penmen (6-6), David Widendfeld and Chris Valentine each scored a couple of goals but came up short in the end.
Southern New Hampshire got the scoring going in the opening frame, but Adelphi was quick to respond with Racalbuto's first of the afternoon.
Joseph Duchnowski added his only goal in the next possession, taking advantage of a man-up situation to take a lead the hosts never relinquished for the remainder of the contest.
Quentin O'Reilly capped the scoring in the opener to hold a 3-1 lead which held through the second quarter after both teams each added two tallies.
The Penmen's Rona DePaul, also a rookie goalie, stopped several shots to open the third quarter and ultimately finished with 18 saves, but Purdie's shot at 8:33 finally found the back of the net to get things going for Adelphi. Rookies
Brian Harinski and
Jack Hipchen both scored to close out the frame but it was five huge stops for Cash in goal that secured the victory for the Panthers.
The visiting team scored twice to start the final 15 minutes of action, but the Adelphi attack padded their bottom line with scores from Purdie and
John Arcidiacono to keep the Penmen at bay. SNHU outscored the hosts 6-3 in the finale, but it was not enough as their season concludes at 6-6 overall with an NE10 tournament appearance.
Adelphi will take a trip north on Wednesday, May 5 to meet up with no. 2 Le Moyne College, who advanced to the semifinals by way of a 15-5 win over no. 7 Franklin Pierce.
