Garden City, N.Y. - The 2021 women's lacrosse season kicked off its first Northeast-10 Conference tournament with divisional format on Friday afternoon, when #6 American International came to Garden City and suffered a 20-3 loss at the hands of #3 SW Adelphi women's lacrosse in the Southwest Division quarterfinals.
In the 17-goal victory, Adelphi's
Alison Johnson was responsible for 11 assists - which is good enough to appear in the top-10 of the individual single game leaders and with one more career assist, she will be in a tie for second in the Division II ranking for career assists. Her play-making allowed four different players to find the back of the net with
Christina McCabe leading the charge with seven goals.
Kole Pollock followed suit and chipped in five while adding two helpers as
Christina Ferrara added a hat trick and then some to the scoring spree.
Emma Lemanski and
Emily Perry split the game in half between the pipes for the Brown and Gold, combining for six saves. In her final outing in a Yellow Jacket uniform, Chelsea Davis picked up eight saves of her own.
The teams traded tallies to open the quarterfinal contest, but a stretch of six goals from the Panthers boosted the home team to a 7-1 lead after nearly 15 minutes of work. In that 6-0 run, Pollock scored three straight in a span of three minutes. Anevay Rice added another for AIC, but a man-down goal from McCabe sparked the offense to score five unanswered and send the game into running time just before the break.
Johnson connected with McCabe and Ferrara on back-to-back possessions to open the second half as the home team spent majority of the frame in their offensive third.
Kristina Schweitzer got the ball and found a way past Davis to keep things rolling for Adelphi, as the Panthers held a 17-9 advantage in shots in the second half alone. Out of the five free-position attempts that the Yellow Jackets were awarded, Perry managed to pick up two as two others landed off the mark, and the final one was converted in the closing minutes to eliminate a shutout in the second.
With the win, the Panthers (7-3) advance to the SW Division semifinals, with an opponent TBD; they will face the winner of #7 SW Saint Rose/#2 SW Pace University, which is being played Friday evening.
