Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University baseball team won the second game of Saturday's doubleheader in walk-off fashion to complete a sweep of the College of Saint Rose, 13-1 and 2-1, in Northeast-10 Conference action at William J. Bonomo Memorial Field.
The Panthers (8-10, 6-5 NE10) will go for the season sweep when the two teams meet again in another doubleheader -- a make-up of this Sunday's expected rainout -- on Wednesday (Apr. 28) at 1 p.m.
Game 1: Adelphi 13, Saint Rose 1
Adelphi was active on the basepaths in the opener, leaving just four on base and tallying 13 runs -- the team's third-highest single-game scoring output this season.
Tim Feliz got it started for the Panthers in the first inning, when he laced a one-out double to left center. Two batters later, he stole third with two outs and came jogging in on a subsequent RBI single by
Michael Draskin.
Adelphi padded its lead in the third, after an errant pickoff throw at first allowed
Anthony Cipri to score from third. The Panthers nearly had more in the inning, but
Brandon Warick was robbed of an extra-base hit at the centerfield wall by Saint Rose's Zephaniah Vaughn.
It didn't matter. Adelphi broke it open with a four-run fourth to widen the gap to 6-0. Cipri highlighted the inning by laying down a perfectly-placed bunt that sailed beyond the first baseman's glove on the attempted putout and brought
Kyle Olson around from second.
Nicolas Luc made the start on the bump and was masterful. He threw 101 pitches and, at one point, faced the minimum over 17 consecutive batters and retired eight straight.
Kevin Glasser cleaned up the final two innings and struck out five.
Game 2: Adelphi 2, Saint Rose 1
The nightcap turned into a pitcher's duel between Adelphi's
Josh Rovner and Saint Rose's Jared Restmeyer.
After each allowing a run in the first inning, both pitchers settled in and traded zeroes over the following three-plus frames. Consequently, the two teams stranded a combined 16 runners through the first 6.5 innings.
Adelphi closer
Michael Storms came on in relief of Rovner with one out in the fifth and proceeded to reduce his ERA to 1.20, which ranks among the Top 5 closers in the NE10. He struck out five of the 11 batters to face him over his 2.2 innings of work, en route to earning his second win of the season.
In the last of the seventh, Feliz, with one out, lined a sharp flyball to center that got behind a diving Vaughn and went to the wall. Feliz, as the potential winning run, ultimately ended up on third, which set the stage for
Jack Ryan.
On an 0-1 pitch, Ryan hit a chopper to the third baseman, Tyler Osborne, who -- with Feliz breaking for home -- made a high throw that allowed Feliz to slide underneath for the game-winning run.
