Walpole, Mass. - On Sunday, the Adelphi University women's tennis team took down the defending NE10 Tournament champion -- Stonehill College -- by a 4-1 final at the Wimbledon 109 Club.
It was Adelphi's (3-1, 3-1 NE10) first win over Stonehill (2-2, 2-2 NE10) since the 2017 NE10 Championship final.
In doubles, the pressure was on Adelphi to take both of the first two flights, after falling into a quick hole upon defaulting at the No. 3 flight.
The Panthers did so in dominating fashion.
At No. 1 doubles,
Nicole Kielan and
Barbie Quagliardi controlled the tempo in a 6-2 victory.
Amanda Franstedt and
Nicole Stay prevailed by a 6-1 final in second doubles.
Franstedt completed her singles match first and posted her second-consecutive 6-0, 6-0 result at No. 3 singles, which swung Adelphi in front.
Quagliardi followed at No. 2 singles and succeeded in straight sets, winning 6-0, 6-4. Stay clinched it with a straight-set victory (6-4, 6-4) of her own at fourth singles.
While their singles matches went unfinished,
Julia Kielan led 4-3 in the first set at No. 5 singles, while her sister, Nicole, was set to play a third set at the top flight.
Head Coach
Rebecca Fakas will now aim to get redemption against Le Moyne, when they meet on Easter Sunday (Apr. 4) at 1 p.m. at Point Set Racquet Club in Oceanside, N.Y.
