Garden City, N.Y. - Newcomer
Joseph Duchnowski notched a hat trick at the right time Wednesday afternoon, netting the game winner in overtime to give no. 7 Adelphi men's lacrosse a 12-11 edge over no. 10 Pace University.
Five other Panthers found the back of the net in the Northeast-10 opener, with
Nicolas Racalbuto also contributing three tallies in the victory.
James Hall and Duchnowski both led the team with four points apiece as
Kevin Rice set a new career-high between the pipes, collecting 14 saves.
Adelphi (1-1, 1-0 NE10) cruised to a 4-1 lead after the opening quarter and managed to hold the Setters (1-2, 1-1 NE10) scoreless for nearly 14 minutes, spanning the first and second frames. Pace was quick to respond in the second, putting up a 4-2 run in under 10 mintues to trail by one at halftime.
Lawrence Galizia sent a pass to
Sean McGovern, who buried a shot to start the third quarter, as the teams traded goals over the ensuing 12 minutes to remain with the home team in the lead by one. Pace's man-up goal to end the third sparked a 4-1 run that gave the Setters their first leads of the contest. The man-up goal from Walker Azzaro with 2:51 left on the clock gave the visitors an 11- 10 advantage but not for long as penalties forced a similar hand for the hosts.
Michael Paccione was responsible for the equalizer and the Panthers actually managed a late shot on goal but an overtime period was imminent. The Setters won the opening faceoff in the overtime frame, but Galizia forced a turnover to put Adelphi on the prowl. McGovern's shot was picked up by Louis Ragusa in goal for the visiting team, quickly shifting the field.
Despite an organized timeout by Pace, Galizia again forced a Setter miscue, giving Adelphi the ball with just over a minute to play. Duchnowski rattled a shot that bounced off the post and
Angelo Caiazzo flew one wide, but it was a top of the arc setup that Hall found Duchnowski to go over the top for the gamewinner.
Edward Perlstein stepped up for faceoff duties in the NE10/Top-10 battle, winning 13-of-27 attempts and scooping up eight grounds balls in the win.
Adelphi men's lacrosse is back in action on Saturday, March 27 when they host American International College. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m. Fans will not be permitted and are encouraged to tune in on
