Garden City, N.Y. - On a frigid Tuesday afternoon at William J. Bonomo Memorial Field, the Adelphi University baseball team suffered an 11-4 defeat at the hands of Molloy College in non-conference action in Garden City.
Although Molloy (3-3) struck first in the game's opening frame and had the early 1-0 lead, Adelphi (2-3) answered right back in its first turn at-bat.
Senior catcher
Jack Ryan continued his torrid start with a game-tying RBI triple to center that scored
Anthony Cipri, who earned a lead-off walk to start the bottom of the first. One pitch later, Ryan scurried home for the go-ahead run on a wild pitch.
The Molloy bats got the better of graduate starter
Tom Ambrosino though.
After four dazzling innings in his first outing against Felician last week, Ambrosino got touched up for four runs (three earned), six hits and three walks over three innings of work.
The Lions jumped out to a 7-3 advantage in the fourth, but the Panthers threatened to tie it in the sixth.
With the bases loaded and one out,
Matt Alifano was sent up to pinch hit. Alifano hit a ball up the middle that was squeezed by the Molloy shortstop and ultimately led to an inning-ending double play that kept Adelphi off the board.
Molloy took advantage of that key defensive play and tacked on another run in the seventh and three more in the eighth to put the game away.
Joe Minucci struck out 10 Adelphi batters over five innings in the winning effort for Molloy, while Ambrosino fanned a pair.
Head Coach
Dom Scala and the Panthers now get back on the road this Thursday (Mar. 18), when they travel to Rutherford, N.J. for a re-match with Felician University at 3:30 p.m.
