Garden City, N.Y. - A game that saw neither side lead by more than ten points, the Adelphi University women's basketball team dropped a close 68-66 decision to NE10 rival American International College on Saturday at the Center for Recreation and Sport.
Despite going 1-3 over their last four games, the Panthers (2-5, 1-2 NE10) have fallen by an average of only 4.6 points per game in the three losses.
The two teams went back and forth in the opening 20 minutes, but a 13-2 AIC run to close out the first half sent the Yellow Jackets (3-3, 1-2 NE10) into the locker room with a 37-32 advantage.
AIC then came out of the break and built as much as a 10-point cushion (46-36) with 2:53 left in the third quarter. It wasn't over for Adelphi.
The Panthers orchestrated another comeback and tied the game at 52-all midway through the fourth. A 14-4 run that carried through the final period was the difference in evening the score.Â
Korina Guerra buried a pair of threes and accounted for eight of the first 10 points in the burst.
Sarah Deyo, who saw her first action at home in an Adelphi uniform, closed the gap to 52-50 and eventually drained the game-tying free throw.
Adelphi hit one field goal though in the final 3:36.
Kaitlyn O'Connell pulled up for a quick three that brought the Panthers within a point at 67-66, but AIC ultimately held on for a two-point victory.
O'Connell registered her fourth double-digit game in her last five contests with a team- and season-high 17-point effort. Guerra knocked three trifectas in a 12-point day.
The Panthers experience a quick turnaround when they host Pace University on Tuesday (Dec. 7) at 5:30 p.m.
