Pleasantville, N.Y. -
Adonis Williams scored a career-high 23 points on Sunday to help the Adelphi University men's basketball team to their second win in as many days over Molloy College, 80-75, at the Conference Challenge Tournament.
Four other players found themselves in double-digit scoring, including
Joshua Koulamallah who finished the game with 10 points and 10 rebounds, for his first double-double of the year. The Panthers (2-0) cooled off their three-point shooting from Saturday night, but went 13-for-18 from the free throw line to shoot 72 percent as a team.
Adelphi's longest stretch of scoring came late in the opening half, beginning when
Chris Coalmon went back to the hoop after an offensive rebound from
Jake Hlywiak, tying the game at nine-all.
Justin Forest made it a 17-point game with 7:03 remaining on the clock, and the Panthers managed to maintain the double-digit advantage with a jumper from
Ronnie Silva as the first frame came to a close.
Coalmon went 4-for-8 in the first half and was responsible for 10 points in his first 10 minutes of action. The Brown and Gold edged Molloy (0-2) in bench points and points in the paint, despite the Lions six steals, to Adelphi's two.
The home team on the scoreboard, Molloy, went on in the second 20 minutes of action to outscore the Panthers 50-45, but were not able to overcome the deficit, after trailing from nearly the start of the contest. With the help of all their free throws in the second frame and 14 points from Williams, Adelphi led by at most 16, but quickly let that slip away as time was winding down.
A scoring drought after the three-minute mark put the Panthers in a tough spot, but performed at the free throw line to keep their opponents at bay.
The Panthers will open up their home season on Saturday, Nov. 20 when they host the College of Saint Rose at 3:30 p.m., following the women's tip at 1:30 p.m.
