Garden City, N.Y. - After gathering in September for its first general meeting of the 2021-22 academic year, the Adelphi Student-Athlete Advisory Committee launched an initiative to raise funds for the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, in recognition of the 20-year anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks.
A concept spearheaded by Adelphi SAAC President
Jackie Brown, the department sold 200 t-shirts and collected donations that amounted to $4,300 in support of the cause.
The front of the t-shirt displayed the American flag draped inside the AU lettermark, with the Tunnel to Towers Foundation logo gracing the back.
Brown, who co-captains the field hockey team, coordinates an annual home game on behalf of the team, which took place this year on Oct. 4, to solicit support for Tunnel to Towers.
The field hockey team annually takes part in the Tunnel to Towers 5K Run & Walk in New York City, but did not do so this fall in caution of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
"I think the Tunnel to Towers fundraiser was a huge success this year. It's amazing to see all of the athletes at Adelphi supporting a great cause. It's an honor to share Stephen Siller's story of bravery on 9/11 and what this foundation does for our heroic first responders," Brown said.
Adelphi women's basketball student-athlete
Emily Miccile, who also helped to coordinate the sale of t-shirts, said:
"Being that this year was the 20th anniversary of September 11, I think it is extremely meaningful that we were able to raise a great amount of money in support of the Tunnel to Towers Foundation. I think it's really inspiring to see how many students, coaches, administrators, faculty and staff supported this cause."
