Winter Park, Fla. - On Sunday, the 2020 season got underway for the Adelphi University softball team at the PFX Spring Games, where it split with Saginaw Valley State University and Western Oregon University at the DiamondPlex in Winter Park.
Game 1: Adelphi 0, Saginaw Valley State 3
Following three scoreless innings, the Cardinals (6-1) scratched across the game's first run in the fourth on a wild pitch and added a two-run homer in the fifth to build their lead to 3-0.
The lead could have been extended to 4-0 in the fifth, but
Elisabeth Berard leapt over the right-field fence to rob Saginaw's Shelby Misiak of a home run.
The Panthers (0-1), who left eight runners on base in the contest, twice brought the tying run to the plate in their half of the sixth. With runners on first and second,
Megan Sneeden flied out to left and
Kailah Konkel popped out to end the threat.
In her first start of 2020,
Ally Muller went six innings in the circle and struck out nine.
Hannah Pineda was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate in her Panther debut.
Game 2: Adelphi 10, Western Oregon 2 - F/6
In the nightcap, Western Oregon (10-8) put a runner in scoring position in five of the game's six innings, but Adelphi starter
Nicole Mengel was equal to the task. Mengel threw six innings and struck out six, while allowing just one earned run.
Tied 1-1 in the second inning, Berard, who stole second earlier in the at-bat, came home on a two-out
Amanda Owens RBI single for the go-ahead run.
Three frames later, the Panthers opened the floodgates. Adelphi (1-1) pieced together a five-run fifth, capped by a two-RBI single off the bat of Berard. Konkel earned a bases-loaded walk.
Abbey Fortin and
Emily Turney drove in runs, as well.
Then, in the sixth, the Brown and Gold tacked on three more to run-rule the Wolves. A routine groundout eventually led to a throwing error by Western Oregon's Sadie Chipley that scored Fortin to end the game.
Head Coach
Carla Campagna and the Panthers will now have a day off, before facing No. 4 Rollins College in a doubleheader under the lights in Winter Park. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
