Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University men's basketball used an extra five minutes in overtime to secure an 87-82 victory over the College of Saint Rose Saturday afternoon inside the Center for Recreation and Sports.
The Panthers (18-7,10-5 NE10) used perfect shooting from the free throw line in the second half and throughout overtime to lock in the win, led by
Spencer Foley, who was 10-10 from the charity stripe. Foley led the team with 30 points and was closely followed by
Ronnie Silva who finished with 28 points after scoring single digits in the first frame.
Tim Delaney was responsible for a team-leading 10 rebounds, splitting them even between offensive and defensive, collecting five apiece.
The College of Saint Rose (5-21,2-15 NE10) saw four different players reach double-digit scoring, as Sekou Sylla and Josh McGettigan each chipped in a team-high 23.
The first points of the contest came from the free throw line after over two minutes of action. The Golden Knight led by at most seven points in the ensuing four minutes, but an 8-1 run in favor of the home team brought the contest even at 10-all with 13:15 left in the first. The teams traded the lead but ultimately Adelphi led by three going into halftime.
In a 14-4 stretch in which Silva scored 10, the Panthers were able to jump out to a double-figure lead after 14 minutes expired in the second half. Saint Rose erased a 12-point deficit in the ensuing six minutes using a 16-4 run of their own to knot the game at 71-71 with 36 seconds left in regulation. Two attempts from three-point range didn't fall for the hosts as the clock continued to tick, forcing overtime for the NE10 matchup.
Saint Rose scored four quick points to kick off the frame, but Silva and
Dwaine Williams each put in a bucket from beyond the arc to regain the lead. As time quickly went by, Foley appeared at the free throw line on three separate occasions, going 6-6 to keep the Golden Knights at bay.\
Adelphi is back in action on their home court on Wednesday, February 19 when they host southwest division foe Pace University. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. inside the Center for Recreation and Sports.
