Garden City, N.Y. - With the help of 10 different goal scorers, the Adelphi University women's lacrosse program kicked off the 2020 season with a 17-7 win over Molloy College Saturday afternoon in their home opener.
For the Panthers,
Gianna Bifulco and
Lena Riportella were both responsible for hat tricks in the win, as
Alison Johnson led all players with six points, courtesy of one goal and five assists. On the other side of the ball, both
Kailey Broderick and
Alexandra Beebe caused three turnovers apiece, contributing to the 21 miscues Molloy had in the game.
For the Lions (0-1), Amanda Weber scored five times on eight shots while winning seven draw controls.
It was the home team that got on the board first, using a Johnson-Riportella combination for the opening goal of the season. Johnson later added a tally of her own to give Adelphi a 2-0 lead after six minutes of action. Molloy netted their first of the year at 24:30, converting a free position attempt, but seven consecutive goals from the hosts allowed the Panthers to hold a comfortable 9-2 advantage.
The stretch of seven unanswered saw goals from Division II Preseason Player of the Year
Kole Pollock and
Alyssa Gillespie, and was capped with
Kristina Kallansrude's first goal in an Adelphi uniform. Prior to the first half expiring, Bifulco notched her first courtesy of a pass from Ferrara that sent the game to running time as the Panthers led 13-3.
In the second frame, the Lions only took eight shots, but added four goals as the home team also matched that number with four of their own. In goal for Molloy, Allie Long collected 10 saves, with seven in the second half alone, seeing a new career-high 46 shots faced.
Another strike from Weber at 14:35 had Molloy trailing by seven, but another career-first tally, this time from
Kaylee LaMonica sparked a three-goal run to close out the contest, giving Adelphi a season-opening victory for the 18th time in the program's 19-year existence.
The Panthers will pack their bags and head to Florida this week as they take on no. 8 Florida Southern on Thursday, February 20.
