Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University women's tennis team opened up its 2019-20 campaign on a high note, defeating Northeast-10 Conference foe Saint Michael's College, 7-0, on Saturday at the Adelphi Tennis Courts in Garden City.

It marked the first career head coaching victory for Frank Russo, who is in his inaugural year at the helm of the Panthers' women's tennis program.

Adelphi (1-0, 1-0 NE10) won all six of its singles matches in straight sets and lost a combined total of only 10 games in the first through fifth flights.

Barbie Quagliardi (6-2, 6-0), Nicole Kielan (6-0, 6-2) and Amanda Franstedt (6-0, 6-2) each dropped just two games at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 singles, respectively.

Julia Kielan was a 6-0, 6-4 victor at the fourth-singles position. Nicole Stay blanked the Purple Knights' (0-1, 0-1 NE10) Caroline Sumner, 6-0, 6-0, in fifth singles. Lea Baschanow battled to win the first set in a tiebreaker (7-6 (7-3)), before taking the second set, 6-2, to lock up sixth singles.

In doubles, the Panthers won two of the three matches to take the team point. Quagliardi and Nicole Kielan cruised to a 6-0 win at the No. 1 flight, while Franstedt and Julia Kielan earned a 6-3 victory in second doubles.

Russo and his Adelphi squad are right back at it Sunday (Sept. 8), when they welcome in another NE10 opponent -- Franklin Pierce University -- at 11 a.m. at the Adelphi Tennis Courts in Garden City.
