Bailey's Double-Double Not Enough to Stop Chestnut Hill

Philadelphia, Pa. - Even with a double-double performance by Victoria Bailey, the Adelphi University volleyball team suffered a five-set defeat to Chestnut Hill College Friday evening in non-league action.

Bailey, who posted 15 kills and 12 digs, was one of two Panthers in double digits. Sophia Powless added 11 kills on a .450 hitting percentage. Brenna Valsted collected 39 assists, while Katarina Warburton put up 25 digs and a team-high six service aces. The Griffins (3-6) were led by Henielys Ramos, who led all players with 17 kills.

The Panthers (4-2) jumped out to a five-point advantage in the opening frame, which they later extended to a seven-point lead. However, the hosts staged a comeback, but came up short, dropping a 25-21 first-set decision.

In the second, Chestnut Hill was two points away from set point, until Bailey sparked a three-point run that had the stage switched, giving Adelphi set point. The teams experienced five more ties and eventually Chestnut Hill posted a set-high 17 kills to secure a 31-29 victory and even the match at 1-all.

With momentum on their side, the Griffins pushed ahead in the third frame, but six unanswered points, starting with a kill from Bailey allowed Adelphi to take a one-point advantage. A service error, one of 23 for the Panthers, allowed Chestnut Hill to go on to score six of the final eight to move ahead in the non-league meeting.

Warburton put down three straight service aces in the fourth to give the Brown and Gold a four-point lead, but five consecutive points from the home team tied the game at 11-11. A 7-1 run put the visiting team in a good position, allowing them to take four of the final six points to force a fifth set.

Both teams posted seven kills in the final frame, but the Griffins came up victorious, having two less errors on offense and at the service line. Cara McKenzie, who notched nine kills and four block assists, and Warburton both registered points down the stretch to come within one, but back-to-back kills from Chestnut Hill closed the door on the non-conference matchup.

Adelphi experiences a quick turnaround, when they return to action on Saturday (Sept. 21), as they head to Bloomfield College for a tri-match featuring the host Bears and Queens College. The contests are scheduled for 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., respectively.
