New Castle, Del. - Two late comebacks stung the Adelphi University softball team in the second round of the NCAA East Regional on Friday, ending the Panthers' 2019 season on day two of the tournament.
Sixth-seeded Adelphi (32-20) lost to second-seeded LIU Post, 4-2, in Friday's opener, and was bounced 6-2 in an elimination game by seventh-seeded New Haven to put an end to its season.
The Panthers led both games 2-0 after five completed innings, only to see their opposition rally each time.Â
The second-seeded Pioneers (49-10) scored a run in the top of the sixth and three in the top of the seventh, keyed by a two-run blast from D2CCA Regional Player of the Year Julia Seader, to rally and move to 2-0 over the first two days of the tournament, ensuring themselves a chance of advancing to next week's Super Regional tournament.Â
Adelphi scored two runs in the bottom of the third inning thanks to RBI singles from NE10 Rookie of the Year
Emily Whitman and
Emily Turney, chasing LIU Post starter Katie Humhej after 3.1 innings, but were unable to score more despite having a runner on in each of the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. Â
Against New Haven, Adelphi again took the lead early, with RBI singles from Turney and
Ashley Lombardi to lead 2-0 in support of
Nicole Mengel. However, it all came apart in a six-run fifth frame by the Chargers (33-15), who put together a rally thanks to six hits, two walks and two wild pitches in a combined effort by Mengel,
Jessica Vadala and
Ally Muller.
The Panthers' first season under head coach
Carla Campagna ended with the team's eighth straight regional berth, and a third straight appearance in the Northeast-10 Conference championship game.Â
