Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University softball team nearly came away with a key sweep of the University of New Haven on Wednesday afternoon, but fell about 60 feet short.
The Southwest Division-leading Panthers (22-16, 14-5 NE10) split two with the second-place Chargers (25-11, 20-4 NE10) on Janet L. Ficke Field, winning game one, 3-0, before falling by a 6-5 final in game two.
Adelphi led the nightcap 2-0 after scoring a pair in the first inning, but surrendered a five-run sixth en route to coming to the plate down 6-2 in the seventh.
The Brown and Gold plated three, thanks in part to a leadoff solo home run by
Emily Turney and a one-out, RBI double for
Ashley Lombardi, but the Panthers could not push the tying run across, stranding Lombardi at third to end the game.
Reigning NE10 Pitcher of the Week
Ally Muller, who was honored as the National Fastpitch Coaches' Association's (NFCA) Division II National Pitcher of the Week earlier on Wednesday, ran her scoreless innings streak to 28.0 with her fourth consecutive shutout in the opener.
The sophomore surrendered just four hits across her outing and struck out seven, lowering her season ERA to 1.94.
The Panthers also plated two in the first inning of game one, on an RBI double by
Emily Whitman and an infield single from
Lauren Sandelier, and added their third run in the sixth on another two-base hit from
Lauren O'Neill.
Adelphi has a quick turnaround, returning to action at home tomorrow, April 18, for the first two games of a four-game series with American International College.
Originally scheduled for Friday, but moved due to the threat of rain, the Panthers and Yellow Jackets will play two beginning at 2:30 p.m.
