Garden City, N.Y. - Tonight's win is a highlight for top-ranked Adelphi men's lacrosse, as a 14-6 victory over undefeated Pace University left the Panthers as the lone team remaining with an unblemished record in the Northeast-10 Conference.
With a 7-1 opening stretch, along with an 8-3 first half, the home team secured enough of a cushion to hold on to victory Wednesday. The Setters (6-1, 2-1 NE10) outscored the Panthers (9-0, 5-0 NE10), 6-5, over the final 30 minutes of the contest, but were unable to overcome the deficit to take down the number one team in Division II.
Angelo Caiazzo and Bradley Paterson traded goals in the opening frame that kept the game at an even one-all. An unreleasable penalty against the visitors however, made way for Adelphi to capitalize on their presented man-up situation, in which
Ian Kirby scored two goals in a matter of a minute to push the hosts ahead by two. Over the remaining time in the first and into the second, the Brown and Gold held a 5-2 advantage in goals to lead 8-3 at halftime.
Both teams managed five goals in the third quarter, which included a man-down tally from
Nicolas Racalbuto, which made it a five-goal differential. He finished the contest with a team-leading four goals to match the game-high number also reached by Wyatt Barfoot of Pace.
The Setters were responsible for the only goal of the final quarter when Paterson found a way past Adelphi goalkeeper
Brendan McDougal. In goal for the visitors, Freshman Louis Ragusa tallied 12 stops in net, marking the sixth time this season that he has registered double-figure saves in a game.
Adelphi rounds out the weekend with a road trip north to take on Saint Michael's College on Saturday, March 30. Opening faceoff is set for 11:00 a.m. on the campus of the Purple Knights.
